On top of the botanical interest from Horticulture, the amazing multiuse’s make this botanical an essential for my Apothecary. For the best medicinal purposes, the plant is best harvested and dried/prepared in Bealtaines Summer to and throughout Midsomers Litha. On top of overall folkloric, cosmetic and culinary uses, Prunella vulgaris has a long history of use in the European or white tradition of the 'Materia Medica'. I have included a summary from my own Materna Medica here plus some preparation overviews. Stay tuned for Healing Teapot, Selfheal Compress, Selfheal infused Oil and Syrup Recipes which will be linked to the Self heal Chapter when done. I also recommend reading the blogpost on the Selfheal energetics and summary of my uses outside including the Materna Medica. From Chapter 'Selfheal craft' Summary from My 'Materia Medica'
Cancer treatment, Lymphosarcoma stagnant/swollen Lymph Nodes and non-serious NodulesSelfheal with its anticancer effects, especially against lung cancer and lymphoma, moving lymph, also has been shown to possess an anti-estrogenic quality. Researchers surmise that it could be used to prevent or stop estrogen-dependent tumors. Protecting the skin from Sun Damage, Summer Rashes and OverheatingSelfheal cools the body and disperses heat. The mild demulcent qualities may also help to rehydrate as well. Selfheal and its constituent rosmarinic acid have been shown to protect skin cells from UVA and UVB radiation. In one study, researchers looked at self-heal as an herbal photo-protectant and concluded that self-heal may offer protection against the sun when used in dermatological products. Addressing inflammation, that is associated with High Blood Pressure, Diabetes and Heart DiseaseSelfheal has been shown to increase insulin sensitivity, thus preventing or reducing the effects of metabolic syndrome and diabetes. Most heart disease is a symptom of this increasingly common metabolic syndrome, a chronic disease that manifests as poor glucose metabolism that creates a systemic inflammatory condition. Selfheal may also lower blood pressure and has been shown to have inflammatory-modulating effects on cardiovascular tissues. Allergies and InflammationAs part of its immunomodulating action, Selfheal reduces an excessive immune system response like what we see with seasonal allergies or chronic inflammation. Headaches, Vertigo, Dizziness, and Painful EyesHeadaches and painful eyes that are worse at night are indications for use of Selfheal, recommended for many types of eye complaints, including red eyes, conjunctivitis and eye-tearing. “It is often combined with Chrysanthemum flowers for fever, headaches, hypertension, dizziness, vertigo and hyperactivity in children.” Robert Dale Rogers Upper Respiratory Infections, soothing Sore Throats and to support a Healthy Immune SystemSelfheal has polysaccharides (like astragalus and many mushrooms), which are known to be balancing to the immune system, or immunomodulating. Taken regularly, self-heal may support a healthy immune system and reduce the incidence of upper respiratory infections. Self-heal was historically used for sore throats, even severe ones like quinsy, which is an abscess of the tonsils. It is a great choice as a hot tea at the beginning stages of a cold with sore throat. In addition to fighting the virus, the demulcent qualities of self-heal will help to soothe and coat a dry, scratchy or irritated throat. Treating and preventing Chronic Viral InfectionsSelfheal is said to have antiviral properties, especially against the herpes simplex virus, HPV and even HIV. Researchers have shown that it inhibits the binding ability of a virus, making it most effective at preventing and stopping new outbreaks. Because it inhibits the ability of viruses to replicate, it is most effective at stopping recurring localized viral infections such as herpes. Some interesting in-vitro studies have been done using Selfheal against HIV, showing that is has the ability to inhibit viral replication in a petri dish. Researchers on these studies are optimistic about their findings and have encouraged more testing to be done. In this regard I do not hold belief in the virus theory within virology and would more likely to assume the cancer like growths of otherwise normal cells are more ‘key’ here in the ‘antiviral’ research. Shift Stuck MoodsShifting stuck anger including one of it depressive results. Also nice in situations where there's stuck anger, unexpressed anger, and anger getting turned inwards to become depression, depression in that it’s a form of anger. Strengthen of the Kidneys and DiuresisUsed especially when there is deficient kidney function, as a mild diuretic Selfheal could be helpful for draining dampness, such as edema. Treating wounds, internally and externallyFor Healing Wounds, Burns, Abscesses and Boils. Some herbalists liken its qualities to plantain’s vulnerary abilities. Both of these plants are somewhat astringent and demulcent, stabilizing tissue whilst protecting the skin’s moisture at the same time. Selfheal is used for wounds on the skin, including cuts, scrapes and burns. It’s also used for drawing out infections, such as abscesses and boils. Internally, Selfheal has been used for ulcers, especially those in the mouth and throat. Selfheal is a styptic herb that can staunch the flow of bleeding similar to yarrow or shepherd’s purse. “There is not a better wounde herb in the world.” Robert Dale Rogers “…when you are hurt you may heal yourself.” Culpeper Some PreparationsDew or hydrosol of self-heal As a tonic for preventing and treating summer heat and summer rashes in both children and adults, Selfheal may offer protection against the sun when used in dermatological products such as Selfheal ‘Infused oils’ in creams or sprays. Mouthwash or Gargle The following is from Useful mouthwash or gargle for infections of the mouth or throat. By A Curious Herbal. A book illustrated by Elizabeth Blackwell and published in 1737. Traditionally, self heal was used for inflammations and sores of the mouth and throat, of both viral and bacterial causes (Wood, 2008). A strong infusion can be made from the leaves and used as a gargle or mouthwash to help calm inflammation, promote local immunity, assist in tissue healing, and promote overall oral health. Prepare a lip balm For oral herpes support and for soothing cracked, dry lips too. Alcohol extracted Toner Self heal is an astringent herb, making it useful to apply topically to reduce localized swelling through tonifying and tightening the tissues it touches (Holmes, 1989). Cleaning Minor Wounds long infusion One of the reasons why self heal is such a valuable herb for wounds is due to the fact that it can help stimulate the action of phagocytes, or the cells which can engulf and absorb bacteria in the body (Holmes, 1989) when used internally. This herb can also help staunch the flow of blood when applied topically, making it a useful first aid tool when bleeding is present (Holmes, 1989). The aerial parts of self heal can be prepared in a then poured over the wound as an herbal wash to help clean or irrigate a wound. Notes on Preparations and ConsiderationsResearchers have studied the chemical composition of self-heal gathered at different times of the year and concluded that it has a higher biochemical value when harvested earlier in the year. They have also studied how storage time effects dried self-heal and recommend that one should use self-heal within a year of drying for best results. *Note: water content can turn the oil rancid so be sure to work with dry herbs when working with Oil Infusing. Self-heal is a mild plant with no known toxicity, making it safe for most people. It has some possibility of interfering with blood thinners. Selfheal can harm someone who already has weak digestion if taken in large amounts over time. Legalise Disclaimer: All content herein is not intended to replace medical advice.
